Meta poised to lay off staff in augmented reality wing - report

Staff are set to be informed of any changes by 'early Wednesday,' according to sources

Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is poised to cut staff in its augmented reality technology division on Wednesday, according to a Reuters report.

Staff from Meta’s Reality Labs business, which designs custom silicon for the Facebook owner’s virtual ‘Metaverse’, were informed of potential changes in an internal forum post, according to Reuters sources.

They will be notified about their status within the company by early Wednesday morning, the source said.

The cuts will affect staff in the subsidiary’s Facebook Agile Silicon Team, which saw a leadership shakeup in spring ahead of an anticipated restructuring.

Some 600 people work in the team, which focuses on designing chips for Meta’s devices, including its augmented reality glasses.

Though the extent of the cuts remains to be seen, job losses would add to some 21,000 layoffs made by the tech giant over the past year.
