Spotify Technology SA (NYSE:SPOT) has announced that its audiobook service will offer well over 150,000 titles to premium subscribers at no extra cost.
In a move set to see it rival Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN)’s Audible service, Spotify will offer subscribers some 15 hours worth of spoken books per month from a catalogue of over 150,000 titles.
“We believe that offering personalized music, podcasts, and audiobooks on a single platform gives you a superior way to connect with your favourite artists, podcasters, creators, and authors,” Spotify announced on Tuesday.
Users in the UK and Australia will be able to access the updated audiobook service from Wednesday, with this then being introduced in the US later this year.
Spotify had introduced audiobooks onto its site late last year, with users able to purchase individual titles.
Under its new service, those paying for a premium subscription - which sits at £10.99 for individuals - will be granted the initial 15 hours of listening at no extra cost, but then can purchase extra 10-hour allocations.
“By putting this very compelling offering together and serving it to [...] over 220 million subscribers, we believe that we are really addressing an interesting opportunity,” Spotify chief business operator Alex Norstrom said.
