Tesla shares gain traction as EV maker introduces cheapest Model Y yet

Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) shares gained almost 6% on Wednesday following the news a day earlier that it has introduced a new, cheaper variant of its Model Y electric vehicle (EV) in the United States.

The rear-wheel drive appeared on Tesla’s US website overnight, replacing an all-wheel driver version that the company discontinued last month.

The vehicle sells for $43,990, which is $3,750 less than its AWD predecessor. Taking into account the $7,500 Federal EV Tax Credit, the RWD Model Y is available for $36,490.

That’s the cheapest Model Y available in the US to date.

The electric SUV has a 260-mile range, a top speed of 135 mph and can go 0-60 miles per hour in 6.6 seconds.

Notably, this car is not the updated Model Y revealed in China on Monday. That model comes with black wheels and an LED strip inside, according to reports.

Tesla shares finished the trading day Wednesday up 5.9% at US$261.16.
