Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:MU) is to get an additional subsidy of US$1.3 billion (¥192 billion) from the Japanese government for an advanced semiconductor plant in Hiroshima.
Japan has already advanced Micron ¥46 billion for the development following the US-based chipmaker stating it will spend around ¥500 billion investing in advanced chip plants in the country.
Micron will use the plant to produce advanced chips using ASML’s extreme ultraviolet lithography machinery.
Japan is desperate to reduce its dependence on China for microchips and plans to triple its own capacity.
Micron Technology is also investing in a chip assembly and test facility in India helped there by another US$1.3 billion grant, while also boosting its presence in China.
