GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME) shares rallied in Thursday pre-market trading after it announced that its chairman Ryan Cohen will also become president and CEO of the video game retailer.
The company noted that he will not receive compensation for serving in the three roles.
Its shares rose 8.5% to $17.15 ahead of the opening bell.
Cohen, a shareholder, joined GameStop’s board in 2021 and was made executive chairman in June 2023 to oversee management and capital allocation after the company fired former CEO Matt Furlong without giving a reason.
Also in June, it was revealed that Cohen scooped up almost $10 million in GameStop shares, taking his stake to about 12%, according to a filing published by the SEC.
Cohen founded e-commerce company Chewy in 2011 and was its CEO until 2018, a year after it was acquired by PetSmart (NASDAQ:PETM).
