Elon Musk’s X has been slated for seemingly disabling a feature on the social media platform that allowed people to report posts containing misinformation related to elections.
Users had been able to report posts relating to political issues since the feature was introduced in 2022.
However, according to researcher Reset.Tech Australia, the button on X - previously Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) - posts has now vanished in every part of the world bar the European Union.
Raising concerns over “electoral integrity”, the group questioned the move ahead of an October vote in Australia over constitutionally recognising its indigenous population.
“It is extremely concerning that Australians would lose the ability to report serious misinformation weeks away from a major referendum,” an open letter read.
Musk has previously been scrutinised for his relaxed content moderation on the site, with hordes of advertisers having quit over concerns of hate speech - a move that has hit the company’s revenues.
“It would be helpful to understand why X has seemingly gone backwards on their commitments to mitigating the kind of serious misinformation that has translated into real political instability,” Reset.Tech Australia's chief executive, Alice Dawkins, added.
