UPS prepares to hire over 100,000 seasonal workers this holiday

United Parcel Service Inc (NYSE:UPS) has announced that it will hire more than 100,000 seasonal employees to cope with the 2023 holiday rush.

The parcel delivery giant said it is filling full-time and part-time positions for the holiday season, including drivers and packaging handlers, at locations across the US. Some permanent positions are also available in some areas for early applicants, it added.

“We’re looking forward to delivering yet another leading on-time performance this holiday season and helping thousands of workers kick off their UPS careers in the process,” president of the company’s US operations Nando Cesarone commented.

UPS is not alone in increasing its holiday workforce in an uncertain consumer environment.

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) plans to add 250,000 holiday workers in full-time, part-time, and seasonal logistics roles across the US as the holiday season starts.

However, while online retailers expect a bumper holiday season, physical stores are cutting back on holiday hires due to weak consumer confidence and rising labor costs.

According to a report by outplacement services firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas, seen exclusively by Reuters, retailers are expected to add just 410,000 seasonal jobs for the upcoming holidays based on Bureau of Labor Statistics data. In the fourth quarter of 2022, US retailers added 519,400 jobs.
