BT unveils timetable to scrap landlines and switch to digital voice

This quarter those in London and the northwest will be switched

BT Group PLC (LSE:BT.A) has announced the timetable for the ending of landlines using traditional analogue phones and replacing them with digital services instead.

Households will be invited to make the switch to a digital service on a region-by-region basis, BT said, starting this quarter with those in London and the northwest, moving to the West Midlands, southeast, Wales and East Anglia in spring 2024 and the northeast, Scotland and southwest in summer 2024.

Trials have already been running in some areas with Yorkshire and the Humber switching last month and Northern Ireland this.

Customers in areas next on the list will be contacted four weeks in advance at least, said the telecoms group.

Lucy Baker, All-IP director, BT Consumer, said: “Through the work with our Digital Voice Advisory Group and our regional engagement, we’ve held 40 events, placed local radio and newspaper ads and met over 4,000 customers in person.

“We understand that any change can be unsettling, and we’re here to support our customers every step of the way. First-hand experience shows that once people have the facts and have spoken to one of our advisors, they feel confident to make the switch."

Rocio Concha, Which? director of Policy and Advocacy added: “There are important advantages to going digital – such as a clearer connection – but it is essential that no one gets left behind in the move away from traditional landlines.

“Vulnerable consumers will need extra support to make the switch. All providers must put clear plans in place to make sure everyone has the help they need – including clear communications, giving proper notice ahead of switching and providing extra assistance if needed.”
