Galaxy chocolate becomes latest ‘shrinkflation’ target

Galaxy chocolate bars, owned by Mars Inc, have become the latest product to fall victim to shrinkflation, with the standard-sized bar increasing in price despite shedding 10 grams.

Previously weighing 110g, the milk chocolate bar has been reduced to 100g and retailers like Tesco are still hiking prices, with the sweet treat currently priced at £1.25 compared to this time last year when the heavier version cost only 99p, according to trolley.co.uk.

Asda and Morrisons have also hiked the price, with the latter upping prices from 50p to £1.50, while the former raised it by 25p from £1.

“We have been actively trying to find ways to absorb the rising costs of raw materials and operations, as we know the increase in the cost of living has impacted both consumers and businesses across the UK,” a Mars Wrigley spokesperson explained.

“Unfortunately, the growing pressures mean that more needs to be done. Reducing the size of our products is not a decision we have taken lightly but it is necessary for shoppers to still be able to enjoy their favourite Galaxy treats without compromising on quality or taste.”

Prices on supermarket shelves are dictated by the retailers but Mars raised the price it charges operators back in October last year, the Telegraph claims.

Mars isn’t the only company to be ‘shrinkflating’ products, with Jacob’s mini cheddars reducing in size and cheesiness, while Unilever reduced the number of Magnum ice creams in a pack from four to three.
