Meta to launch AI personas to lure Gen Z onto Facebook

The chatbot will be equipped with a range of personas based on TV and historical figures

Facebook owner Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ:FB) is reportedly poised to introduce a new chatbot equipped with various personas aimed at encouraging younger people onto the site.

Dubbed 'Gen AI Personas', the bot is due to be unveiled at Meta’s Connect event on Wednesday, according to the Wall Street Journal.

This will include a range of personalities based on historical and television figures, such as Abraham Lincoln and Futurama character Bender.

According to reports, the move is a bid to encourage those from Gen Z - between the ages of 11 and 26 - onto Facebook.

Most of those on Facebook are older than 25, Statista data shows, with just 3.4% of the social media’s accounts registered with people between the ages of 13 and 17.

Rival social media Snap Inc (NYSE:SNAP)’s Snapchat introduced an artificial intelligence (AI) bot in February, which can be chatted to on the app as if it were another user.

Though Meta became the first technology giant in July to release its own AI bot when it open-sourced Llama 2 for commercial use, ‘Personas’ will be the first to feature on one of the company’s social media sites.
