YouTube plans on rolling out a range of artificial intelligence-powered tools for content creators, the latest attempt by its parent company Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG) to leverage generative AI (GenAI) to gain an edge over its competitors.
The video-sharing platform said on Thursday at its Made on YouTube event that later this year it intends to commence testing of a new experimental feature that will allow users to create AI-generated video or image backgrounds for YouTube Shorts, YouTube’s vertical short-form video form which was launched in 2020 to compete with TikTok.
The feature, called Dream Screen, will allow users to create video or image backgrounds simply by typing an idea into a prompt, YouTube said.
It will be introduced for select creators soon before being rolled out more broadly in 2024.
Other AI-powered tools in the works include a feature in YouTube Studio that will provide users insights to help them come up with video ideas and a search assistant for Creator Music.
The company is also bringing an AI-powered dubbing tool called Aloud into YouTube to make it easier for users to dub their content into additional languages.
Further, YouTube said that it will be launching a new video editing app called YouTube Create which offers tools including precision editing and trimming, automatic captioning, voiceover capabilities, and access to filters, effects, transitions, and royalty-free music.
“The future of creation on YouTube is bright as we start to see how AI-powered tools can help transform people’s dreams into reality, and we can’t wait to see what gets Made on YouTube next,” YouTube said in a blog post announcing the new features.
