Amazon invests over $1B in wages, ramps up hiring

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) said it is investing $1.3 billion in 2023 towards pay increases for customer fulfillment and transportation employees, taking the average hourly pay for the roles to $20.50.

The e-commerce giant also announced it is hiring 250,000 people in full-time, part-time, and seasonal logistics roles across the US as the holiday season starts.

Like other retailers, Amazon hires more workers to deal with the increase in sales that traditionally kicks off during the Thanksgiving weekend. It reported a record-breaking holiday season in 2022, with customers purchasing nearly half a billion items from small businesses in the US.

During its biggest Thanksgiving-through-Cyber-Monday holiday shopping weekend ever, customers around the world purchased hundreds of millions of products.

It is getting an early start to the holiday shopping season this year, announcing on Monday that its Prime members Big Deal Days sale will run from October 10 to 11.

“Whether someone is looking for a short-term way to make extra money, or is hoping to take their first step toward a fulfilling and rewarding career at Amazon, there’s a role available for them,” commented senior vice president of Worldwide Operations John Felton.

“A fulfillment or transportation employee who starts with us today will see a 13% increase in pay over the next three years—likely more, including our annual wage investments—and that’s on top of offerings like prepaid college tuition with Career Choice and health care benefits from day one.”

The company said it has opened over 50 new fulfillment centers, delivery stations, and same-day delivery sites in the US this year, resulting in hundreds or thousands of new job opportunities per site, depending on its size and location.
