Octopus Energy invests in giant European wind farm

Each turbine at the farm is similar in height to the Gherkin building in London

Octopus Energy has invested in one of Europe’s largest offshore wind farms, the generator announced on Tuesday.

A 10% stake was purchased in the North Sea’s Borssele III & IV wind farm, Octopus said, which provides power to over 825,000 Dutch households.

“Investing in one of Europe’s largest wind farms in the Netherlands is a really exciting milestone,” co-head of the firm’s fund management team Alex Brierley said.

“We only entered the Dutch renewables market last year.”

The move comes as part of Octopus’ plans to invest £15 billion globally in offshore wind projects.

Over the past year, Octopus has also bought stakes in the Lincs and Hornsea One offshore farms in the UK, with the latter making up one of the world’s largest wind farms.

Borssele III & IV is made up of 77 turbines, each as tall as the Gherkin building in London, and offers Octopus further exposure to Europe’s third-largest offshore wind market.
