Elon Musk has hinted social media platform X could be placed behind a paywall in a bid to tackle bots on the site.
“A small monthly payment for use of the system” could be introduced on the site, Musk said in an interview with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
“This is a longer discussion, but in my view, this is actually the only defence against vast armies of bots.”
X has gone through a host of changes since Musk bought the site - then known as Twitter Inc (NYSE:TWTR) - last year, with a host of paid-for features having been added.
These came as Musk seemingly battled to monetise the site in the face of faltering advertising revenue, prompted by concerns over relaxed content moderation.
The latest change would mark Musk’s continued attempts to flush out fake accounts on the site by charging for verification.
Though the site remains largely free, users are currently able to purchase a premium subscription for US$8 (£6.50) a month, which grants a blue verification tick on their profiles.
“We just want it to be just a small amount of money,” Musk continued, suggesting users would be charged less than the current price of a subscription.
