Salesforce goes on 'boomerang' hiring spree

Salesforce Inc.(NYSE:CRM) announced that it is hiring 3,300 people across its departments just months after laying off 8,000 employees in January.

The cloud-based software company said recruitment efforts would include rehiring some “boomerangs,” or people who worked at Salesforce before going to a different company, according to its CEO.

"Our job is to grow the company and to continue to achieve great margins," Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff told Bloomberg Thursday in an interview at the company’s annual conference in San Francisco.

The plan to hire 3,300 new employees is expected to restore nearly 40% of the staff laid off during a 10% workforce reduction earlier this year.

The new hires will be roughly split equally among sales, engineering, and those working on the company’s data cloud product, according to Salesforce chief operating officer Brian Millham.

Benioff and Millham also noted that the company plans to invest in new areas such as generative AI and push some of its popular products, such as the Data Cloud.

Salesforce reported it had 70,456 employees at the end of July.

Shares of Salesforce have gained 62% year to date.
