Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has launched a range of new search functions that it says will make it easier for consumers to shop for products without relying on other search engines. Some of the updates are similar to features already available on Pinterest and Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)'s Google, potentially threatening their digital advertising revenue.
In a news release, the e-commerce giant said these include augmented reality (AR) search history, autocomplete suggestions, spelling corrections and suggestions for related searches.
Using a combination of images and text, Amazon said one of the new functions uses visual search algorithms to help consumers identify replacement parts for appliances that they don’t know the name of, similar to Google’s multisearch feature.
The company has also extended its AR 'View in Your Room' feature to include tabletop items like lamps and small kitchen appliances so consumers can visualize how they will appear around their homes.
The sales trend feature has been updated to include indicators of the recent popularity of products.
Similar to a long-standing Pinterest feature, with 'Find-on-Amazon', products spotted online can be shared with the Amazon Shopping app, where similar products will be identified.
The company said its updated search functions also make it easier for shoppers to find previously purchased items.
