Digging deep: Jamie Strauss, founder and CEO of Digbee Limited

Elevating transparency in mining through ESG ratings

In our exclusive interview with Thomas Warner of Proactive Investors, Jamie Strauss, the Founder and CEO of Digbee, provides a comprehensive look into his life, career trajectory, and the transformative role Digbee plays in the mining industry. Digbee is at the forefront of helping mining companies manage and disclose their Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) ratings, thereby offering investors and stakeholders an unprecedented level of transparency and accuracy.

The man behind the mission

Thomas Warner (TW): Let's start with an introduction. Could you tell us a bit about who Jamie Strauss really is?

Jamie Strauss: Certainly, Thomas. I've been involved in the mining industry for a considerable time, specifically in the financial aspects. My journey began at the age of 16 when I joined a stock broking company. Over the years, I've worked in various city institutions before launching Digbee in 2016. I'm married and have two young daughters. We reside in the picturesque county of Dorset.

The evolution of a career

TW: Is there a common thread that has run through your career from its inception?

Strauss: Absolutely. My family has a long-standing history in mining finance. I found my niche in the mining sector between 1997 and 2002, a period when the sector was largely overlooked. One of the key lessons I've learned is the importance of patience in making strategic decisions and the value of maintaining credibility in professional relationships.

Mining: A changing landscape

TW: How do you perceive the future of the mining industry, especially in the context of the energy revolution?

Strauss: The industry is undergoing a transformation. While I've always found mining to be an exciting field, it's crucial for the sector to improve its societal perception. The focus on critical minerals and their role in the energy transition offers an opportunity for the industry to reposition itself and demonstrate it can operate responsibly.

Personal heroes and inspirations

TW: Do you have any heroes or people you particularly admire?

Strauss: One individual who stands out is Rohitesh Dhawan, the CEO of the International Council on Metals and Mining (ICMM). He's not just a great orator but also someone who isn't afraid to tackle the challenging questions that face our industry. His vision aligns closely with mine, and I find that incredibly inspiring.

Life beyond the office

TW: What are your interests outside of your professional life?

Strauss: I have a deep love for outdoor activities. Ski touring and kite surfing are my main passions. I also enjoy sailing and recently had a wonderful sailing weekend with my family. I'm an outdoor person at heart; nature has always been a significant part of my life.

Addressing misconceptions and final thoughts

TW: Are there any misconceptions about you that you'd like to clarify?

Strauss: I can be perceived as brash, but that stems from my genuine passion for what Digbee can accomplish for the mining industry. It's not arrogance; it's a fervent belief in the transformative potential of our platform.

TW: Thank you, Jamie, for this enlightening discussion. We wish you all the best in your future endeavours.
