TotalEnergies seeks suppliers for 500,000 tonnes of green hydrogen

TotalEnergies has issued a call for tenders to supply 500,000 tonnes per year of green hydrogen as part of its strategy to reduce carbon emissions from its European refineries.

The move aims to cut around five million tonnes of CO2 emissions annually by 2030. The company operates six refineries in Europe, located in Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands and France, as well as two biorefineries in France. All these facilities utilise hydrogen in their operations.

The tender is in line with TotalEnergies' goal to replace 500,000 tonnes of hydrogen consumed annually in its refineries with green hydrogen produced using renewable energy sources by 2030.

This initiative is a significant step towards the company's broader objective of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions from its oil and gas operations by 40% by 2030, compared to 2015 levels.

Patrick Pouyanné, chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, stated that the tender aligns with the company's ambition to fully decarbonize the hydrogen used in its European refineries by 2030.

The company is already involved in green and low-carbon hydrogen production projects at its La Mède, Grandpuits, Leuna and Normandy locations.

In addition to the tender, TotalEnergies has existing hydrogen-related projects, including a partnership with Engie at La Mède, an agreement with Air Liquide at Grandpuits to produce partly renewable hydrogen, a supply agreement with German natural gas company VNG at Leuna and another agreement with Air Liquide for the Normandy complex.

TotalEnergies is a global multi-energy company active in nearly 130 countries, focusing on the production and marketing of various forms of energy, including oil, biofuels, natural gas and renewables.
