H&M is opening a second-hand ‘thrift’ shop within its flagship store in London’s Regent Street as part of a drive to make its business less environmentally damaging.
Sales of so-called “Pre-Loved” womenswear will start on October 5 with brands other than H&M’s also available.
The retailer, which said it was part of the growing problem of textile waste, said its autumn-winter 2023 second-hand collection will include metallic dresses and trendy knits with the products on offer changing daily.
Online marketplaces Vinted and Depop have been hugely successful selling second-hand clothes from retailers such as Zara and H&M.
Analysts said it makes sense commercially as well as from an ESG standpoint to try and claw some of this business back.
Zara, the chain owned by Spanish group Inditex and one of H&M's main rivals, has been trialling an online pre-owned platform in Britain since November and has just made the service available in France.
