Santander has withdrawn its eye-catching 5.2% easy access savings account after just over a week due to unprecedented demand.
Experts predicted it would be swamped with applications when the bank launched what they said was the most attractive easy-access savings deal for 14 years.
Santander the account will shut at midnight on Tuesday, just eight days after launch, with savers offered a rate of 2.5% after that.
One financial commentator said the early withdrawal was another example of how poorly the banks are treating savers.
Santander originally said the account would stay open until 17 September, though it did warn it could be withdrawn if demand was high.
Average easy access rates are around 3% currently says financial website Moneyfacts.
