Get ready for the iPhone 15: what to expect from Apple's annual fall event Tuesday

Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) is expected to unveil the iPhone 15 at the company’s annual fall event, which kicks off Tuesday at 10 am PT (1 pm ET).

The event, subtitled “Wonderlust” (not wanderlust) is Apple’s first since the Vision Pro was revealed at the Worldwide Developers Conference in June.

For now, consumers are left wondering what the company will choose to reveal. The iPhone 15 is widely expected, with some predicting a revamped larger iPhone Pro model called the iPhone 15 Ultra.

According to Mark Gurman, considered an authority on Apple leaks, the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus will essentially be an updated iPhone 14 Pro minus the telephoto camera and stainless steel body.

The screen for the base-level iPhone is not expected to change much, other than the new “Dynamic Island” screen cutout introduced with the iPhone 14. Display analyst Ross Young posted on Twitter in September 2022 that he doesn’t expect the base iPhone 15 to come with a high refresh rate screen like the Pro models have.

The biggest, and perhaps most welcome, change is the likely removal of Apple’s signature Lightning connector in favor of a USB-C port.

The European Union enacted a common charger mandate in October 2022, which says “all mobile phones, tablets and cameras sold in the EU will have to be equipped with a USB Type-C charging port.”

It is unclear whether this will affect all iPhones or just those sold in the EU.

Other changes include a new chip for the Pro models called A17 that comes with a 3-nanometer processor. That would be Apple’s smallest one to date.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max is also rumored to come equipped with a new 6x optical telephoto camera. One Apple analyst, Ming-Chi Kuo with TF International Securities, expects the iPhone 15 Pro Max to show off a horizontally mounted periscope lens with a camera unit inside the phone's body, similar to those in Samsung’s Galaxy S23 Ultra and Google’s Pixel 7 Pro.
