Toyota Motor (NYSE:TM) has unveiled a hydrogen-powered version of the Hilux pickup truck at its vehicle plant in Derby.
In a bid to explore different power solutions for its shift to carbon neutrality, Toyota said the hydrogen-powered Hilux bids to boast the reliability and durability of its existing pickups while offering reduced emissions.
“Hilux is a global icon of the Toyota brand with a reputation for exceptional reliability and durability,” the Japanese manufacturer said in a statement.
“The development project has explored how these qualities might be maintained while adopting a new fuel cell electric zero-emission powertrain.”
Ten of the models will be built by the end of this year, with these set to undergo testing to determine whether they meet production standards.
A decision is then expected on mass production in 2024, with the truck said to have a range of 600 kilometres.
Though the hydrogen used to power the pickup does not release emissions when burned, whether the fuel is green or not depends on how it is produced.
Given that renewable-powered electrolysis is currently among the least-used methods of production in the UK, critics have been sceptical about the use of hydrogen as an alternative fuel.
Toyota explained the prototype showed its commitment to a 2035 net zero target at its European wing, with conventional fuel-burning cars facing bans in both Europe and the UK in the 2030's.
“Its debut is a further demonstration of the broad scope of Toyota’s multi-path strategy for achieving carbon-free mobility,” the company added.
