Negotiations between automakers General Motors (GM) and Stellantis and the United Auto Workers Union (UAW) have hit a roadblock this week as negotiations for a new contract approach a two-week strike deadline.
In a sign of escalating tensions, the UAW union's president, Shawn Fain, has filed an unfair labor practice complaint against GM and Stellantis.
The UAW alleges that GM and Stellantis have not bargained in good faith, failing to respond to the union's economic demands during negotiations.
Experts suggest this complaint is more of a negotiating tactic than a legal maneuver, given its likely extended processing time.
GM and Stellantis vehemently deny the accusations, claiming they are committed to fair negotiations.
Meanwhile, the UAW has presented ambitious contract demands, including significant raises, pay and benefits equality, and cost-of-living adjustments. Ford responded to these demands with a 9% pay increase offer, which the UAW found inadequate.
The UAW has authorized a strike if no tentative agreement is reached. President Fain has stated there will be no contract extensions, raising the possibility of an unprecedented simultaneous strike against GM, Stellantis, and Ford, affecting 145,000 UAW members.
The contract expires at 11:59pm on September 14.
