Move over Barbenheimer, here comes Exorswift

Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour Concert Film will open in North American theatres the same day as the latest installment of The Exorcist franchise, sparking double feature potential like the Barbenheimer phenomenon.

This summer, the same-day release of Warner Bros Discovery Inc (NASDAQ:WBD)’s Barbie and Universal Studios' Oppenheimer created a double feature event, encouraging audience cross-over between the films that drove impressive box office sales.

Excitement over another potential big movie duo was already spreading online just hours after Swift’s concert film was announced on Thursday.

And just like Barbenheimer, the two films would normally attract entirely different crowds, which could lead to boosted box office sales.

Popstar Swift's film documents her Eras Tour to date which is on track to be the first-ever tour to surpass $1 billion in ticket sales, whereas Blumhouse’s The Exorcist: Believer is a supernatural horror film about two young girls possessed by the devil.

Exorswift is good news for cinema chains like AMC Entertainment Holdings (NYSE:AMC) and Cineplex (TSX:CGX) heading into the fall period now that this year’s summer blockbusters have come and gone and amid the dual Hollywood writers and actors strikes, which have already resulted in the release dates for highly anticipated films like Dune: Part Two being pushed off until 2024.
