Amazon and Disney in talks for ESPN streaming service

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) is in talks with The Walt Disney Company (NYSE:DIS) to develop an ESPN streaming service and potentially take a small stake in the cable sports network, according to a report from The Information which cited people with knowledge of the matter.

The report said that ESPN and its majority owner Disney are still determining an appropriate price for the new service.

It could cost between $20 and $35 per month for the service which would make it the most expensive streamer in the U.S., according to the report.

A dedicated streaming offering could cement ESPN as the biggest name in sports media as it has suffered from declining television viewership numbers and advertising and rising sports programming costs.

ESPN has also reportedly been in talks with sports leagues including the National Basketball Association (NBA), National Football League (NFL) and Major League Baseball (MLB) and companies including Apple and Verizon in its search for a strategic partner.
