Aldi puts the call out for Wilko staff resumes

German supermarket chain Aldi has put the call out for soon-to-be-former Wilko employees to send their resumes over as the household and garden products retailer heads for collapse.

Aldi said over 6,000 jobs are currently available across its UK stores, with 800 new jobs in the pipeline in the coming months.

Family-owned Wilko, which has about 400 stores and employs almost 12,500 people, was forced to call in administrators this month.

Most Wilko stores are likely to shut down, leading to the loss of several thousand jobs, as administrators were unable to secure a buyer for the struggling retailer.

Administrators said stores would remain open for now, with no immediate job cuts or store closures as “discussions continue with those interested in buying parts of the business”.

Poundland, B&M and other former retail rivals of Wilko are expected to snap up the chain’s commercial property assets.

Kelly Stokes, recruitment director at Aldi UK, said: 'We continue to welcome more and more customers to Aldi stores every week, and we are working hard to meet the huge demand for our unbeatable prices.

'That means finding thousands of new Aldi colleagues to support this growth, which will hopefully be of interest to those who have recently lost out due to closures elsewhere.'

Aldi claims to have the best-paid colleagues in the UK supermarket sector.

Store assistants start at £11.40 per hour, with Londoners receiving £12.85. The national minimum wage is £10.42 for people aged 23 and over.
