Cepton Inc (NASDAQ:CPTN), a pioneering player in the lidar (light detection and ranging) technology sector, said it is poised for a significant uptick in growth as it collaborates with General Motors (GM) and attracts attention from other major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs).
In an interview, chief financial officer Hull Xu told Proactive that the company's standout second-quarter financial performance was marked by record-breaking lidar sales, a reflection of its commitment to innovation and excellence. Xu highlighted that the revenue surge was driven by the shipment of lidar products, further cementing the company's strong foothold in the market.
The partnership with General Motors, particularly for their Ultra Cruise models, is a pivotal moment for Cepton. Xu emphasized that the company is on the brink of a significant increase in lidar unit sales, driven primarily by its contract with GM. As the automotive industry experiences a shift towards electrification, Cepton's lidar technology has found resonance as a key enabler of advanced safety and autonomy features.
"As you know, automotive contracts take many years to materialize, especially when we need to hit volume," Xu said. "So, toward the second half of 2023, we're really on the upswing, and 2024 and 2025 is really when we expect to achieve volume sales."
Xu also pointed towards the enormous potential Cepton holds in the coming years. With GM as a trailblazing OEM in technology adoption, other major manufacturers are also looking to incorporate lidar technology into their offerings. The company's strong pipeline and inquiries from various OEMs underline its industry relevance and growth prospects.
While automotive applications remain Cepton's primary focus, the company's lidar technology extends beyond the industry. With applications in security, tolling, and airports, Xu said Cepton is well-positioned to capitalize on a variety of use cases in the broader smart infrastructure sector.
