Is a third bid in the offing for US Steel Corp? Well, according to reports in the morning press in Paris and New York, the answer is a very guarded 'maybe'.
That's because ArcelorMittal SA is widely being touted as contemplating a bid offer for the previously friendless American giant.
There's nothing on the record from the world's second-largest steelmaker; sources close to the negotiations are cited.
Also, such a move would mark a shift in ArcelorMittal's strategy, as the company has divested most of its US operations - to Cleveland-Cliffs, one of two would-be owners of US Steel.
So, there may be some mischief to the reports currently doing the rounds.
Esmark, the private industrial group, has tabled a formal $10bn offer, which includes US Steel's debt.
The United Steel Workers (USW) union, representing, has shown support for the Cleveland-Cliffs deal, despite US Steel deeming its $7.3bn offer "unreasonable", according to Reuters.
USW's endorsement is pivotal due to its negotiation rights. USW International President, Tom Conway, expressed disapproval towards an ArcelorMittal bid, favoring Cleveland-Cliffs.
