Open AI makes first-ever acquisition in AI startup Global illumination

In a significant move, ChatGPT’s parent company OpenAI has acquired Global Illumination, a New York-based startup known for employing AI to create innovative tools, infrastructure and digital experiences.

This acquisition is the first of its kind for Open AI in its seven-year history, as the company targets a revenue of US$200 million this year and an aspirational $1 billion the following year.

While the financial details of the agreement remain undisclosed, OpenAI shared the excitement in a post on its official blog: "We’re very excited for the impact they’ll have here at OpenAI.

“The entire team has joined OpenAI to work on our core products including ChatGPT.”

About Global Illumination

Global Illumination, the brainchild of Thomas Dimson, Taylor Gordon and Joey Flynn, has exhibited a diverse portfolio since its establishment in 2021.

One of the most recent innovations from Global Illumination is Biomes, a web-based, open-source MMORPG bearing similarities to Minecraft.

The future of this game remains uncertain, raising speculations that the team's role at OpenAI might take a turn away from entertainment-focused endeavours.

With the backing of VC firms such as Paradigm, Benchmark and Slow, Global Illumination’s team has a distinguished record, having contributed in the early stages to platforms like Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Google, Pixar and Riot Games.

Dimson's role as the director of engineering at Instagram stands out because he was crucial in refining the platform’s discovery algorithms and was instrumental in initiatives such as Instagram’s Explore tab experience and IGTV.
