Abrdn adopts ‘own version’ of AI as the tech seeps into FTSE 100

Abrdn has become the latest FTSE 100 constituent to boast the use of AI internally

Abrdn PLC (LSE:ABDN) has begun rolling out an in-house version of ChatGPT to staff as the financial services giant looks to adopt generative artificial intelligence en masse.

Set to be used to allow staff more time on higher-value tasks, chief executive Stephen Bird confirmed he and many of his colleagues had already been trained on the system.

“We’ve got our own version of artificial intelligence running internally,” he told the online publication Financial News.

“We think there are applications right across the firm, such as producing investment reports.”

According to Bird, AI-written investment reports offer a roughly “95% working draft,” allowing staff to focus on the likes of analysis and more client-centred work.

FTSE 100-listed Arbdn has struggled of late, with its shares taking a hit since last week’s report of a fall in assets under management.

Though the asset manager doubled its share buyback programme, the move was not enough to prevent investors from jumping ship on comments of macroeconomic challenges.

In a bid to harness the emerging technology, FTSE 100 constituents BT Group PLC (LSE:BT.A), WPP PLC (LSE:WPP) and Unilever PLC (LSE:ULVR) have also been among those to embrace artificial intelligence, with the former planning up to 55,000 job cuts as part of its automation drive.
