Heat pump and solar installations take off

Installations of solar panels and heat pumps in British households jumped to record levels during the first six months of the year.

According to industry accreditation body MCS, some 120,000 solar panels have been fitted on houses so far this year, averaging over 20,000 households a month.

Over 3,000 heat pumps – which are an alternative to gas-powered boilers – were installed each month meanwhile, surpassing the milestone for the first time ever.

“As the cost of energy continues to grow, we are seeing more people turn to renewable technology to generate their own energy and heat at home,” MCS boss Ian Rippin said.

The figures mark a boost for the government, which is targeting 70GW of solar capacity by 2035 and 600,000 heat pump installations come 2028, in a bid to decarbonise homes under its 2050 net zero target.

Tougher rules requiring housebuilders to develop less-polluting homes using the likes of the two technologies are also set to be introduced in 2025.

However, the uptake of grants designed to encourage people to retrofit their homes with heat pumps has been sluggish, with the estimated 17,920 installed this year still not enough to set the UK on course to meet roll-out targets.

MCS called on the government to offer more cash for people to buy and fit heat pumps, over and above grants of up to £6,000 already available.

“More consumers have the confidence to invest in small-scale renewables now than ever, but we have to make that transition even easier,” Rippin added.
