Lightning Minerals enters North America lithium hotspot

Lightning Minerals Ltd (ASX:L1M) has entered an agreement to acquire two projects in the prolific lithium region of James Bay, Quebec, Canada, providing a major boost to the company’s strategy of developing a portfolio of high-quality lithium and critical minerals assets in tier-one jurisdictions.

The company's shares surged over 6% in morning trading, following the announcement.

James Bay acquisitions

L1M has entered a binding Letter of Intent with the project vendors, Lithium Rabbit Quebec Pty Ltd, to acquire 100% interest in the two James Bay projects — the 47 square kilometre Dalmas Project and the 32 square kilometre Hiver Project.

Both projects have historical reports of outcropping pegmatites as mapped by Québec's Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests. Further exploration work, including the verification of historically mapped pegmatitic outcrops is necessary. The company plan to begin ground reconnaissance once the deal is complete.

The Dalmas Project is in the James Bay region of Quebec, approximately 150 kilometres to the east of Patriot Battery Metals’ Corvette lithium Project and 45 kilometres east of Winsome Resources’ Adina lithium Project.

Only limited exploration has occurred at Dalmas, which has 13 sites with geological observations recorded, nine of which have been described as ‘pegmatitic’. All reported pegmatite outcrops will be investigated during early exploration activities.

The Hiver Project is adjacent to Megado Resources’ Cyclone lithium Project and in the proximity of multiple lithium exploration opportunities. It is thought to provide a geologically favourable host environment for potential hard rock LCT pegmatite style mineralisation.

Quebec is quickly becoming one of the world’s leading lithium regions, with the Quebec government actively investing in the lithium sector, including exploration grants and funding the development of infrastructure.

The James Bay district is particularly well regarded, hosting multiple large scale lithium projects including Allkem’s James Bay lithium project, Nemaska Lithium’s Whabouchi lithium project, Critical Elements’ Rose lithium project, and Sayona Mining’s Moblan lithium project.

The region is also home to Patriot Battery Metals’ Corvette lithium Project, the largest hard rock lithium deposit in the Americas with a 109.2 million tonne resource grading 1.42% lithium oxide, as well as Winsome Resources who are exploring multiple lithium exploration projects in the region.

Project acquisition opportunities

Lightning Minerals chief executive officer, Alex Biggs, said, “We have been actively pursuing project acquisition opportunities both in Canada and Australia since our listing in November 2022 and have reviewed multiple projects.

“As we grow the company, we look to build our project pipeline with high quality additions to our portfolio, presenting upside to investors that is relevant to the global push towards electrification and green energy. Quebec now provides further depth and optionality in our exploration strategy in another of the world’s best lithium regions”.

The addition of the James Bay lithium projects adds to the company’s flagship Dundas Project in Western Australia, where recent positive exploration results have demonstrated significant potential.

The Dundas Project remains Lightning Minerals principal focus with the acquisition presenting optionality and a strong value proposition with significant upside potential.
