Amazon tracking workers to ensure compliance with hybrid working policy: reports

Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) has been tracking its US-based workers to ensure they comply with the company’s hybrid working policy that requires them to go in-office at least three days a week, according to a report by the Financial Times.

Select employees of the ecommerce giant were contacted via email and told by the company that they were “not currently meeting our expectation of joining your colleagues in the office at least three days a week”, according to an email seen by the publication.

“We expect you to start coming into the office three or more days a week now,” the email said.

Employees' attendance in-office was reportedly tracked using data from staff identification badges.

Amazon said in a note seen by the Financial Times that the email had been sent to employees who had “badged in fewer than three days a week for five or more of the past eight weeks [or] have not badged in three days a week for three or more of the past four weeks.”

In response to staff complaints about the email, with employees citing privacy concerns or that they had received the email by mistake, Amazon reportedly said “there may be instances where we have it wrong” and that it had “taken several steps” to ensure the email “went to the correct recipients.”

Amazon implemented its three-day in-office policy on May 1, joining other technology companies in requesting that its staff return to the office part-time after allowing remote work during the COVID-19 pandemic.
