Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) will install self-checkout kiosks in some of its stores in an attempt to attract more shoppers.
Many Amazon Fresh stores have boasted ‘just walk out’ technology since being launched in 2020, which allows shoppers to pick up groceries and leave without paying on-site.
However, Amazon will install self-checkout desks in stores near Chicago and in Southern California to give customers an alternative option to having their online accounts billed after a shop.
“The customers that enjoy just walk out […] really love it,” Amazon grocery vice president Tony Hoggett commented.
“But, we also recognize that it's so new for many, many customers. The whole point for us is everybody's welcome in our stores.”
The move will come as part of a major revamp effort, which will include different decorations and counters selling the likes of coffee and snacks potentially being rolled out to over 40 stores in the US.
"We are always looking for ways to make the shopping experience at Amazon Fresh as convenient as possible,” a spokesperson added.
“We are adding self-checkout lanes to specific stores as another option for customers looking for added convenience.”
Amazon operates around 20 of the stores in the UK, and previously had plans for over 100.
However, a reassessment of its UK portfolio saw Ealing Broadway’s Amazon Fresh store – the first till-less site outside of the US - close last month, after sales at many sites fell short of projections last year.
