Marks & Spencer: Is City sentiment turning for the retailer?

Is Marks & Spencer Group PLC, a mainstay of UK retail, witnessing a transformation in investor sentiment?

Recent reports from both Shore Capital and Barclays Capital appear to underscore this shift.

Tuesday's deep dive by Barclays Capital into the company's future resonates with the renewed optimism seen in Shore's research.

Sparks flying

Authored by veteran retail sector analyst Clive Black, who is widely followed by the investment community, Shore's note outlines several promising developments.

Visits to various M&S stores revealed an improved retail environment and merchandising, translating into market share gains in food and clothing sectors.

Despite challenges such as a wet July, full-price sales have remained strong in both areas.

Clothing and food

Signs of strength in M&S's clothing segment, with better sales in the year to date, stands out, as the wettest July on record in Ireland did not deter robust full-price sales.

The food business has also impressed, with a consistent and robust assortment and positive operational gearing in food, notwithstanding Brexit-related hurdles.

Barclays' new dawn

Echoing Black's findings, Barclays Capital's research from Tuesday, referred to by Proactive, talks of a "new dawn for Marks & Spencer".

This "time to buy" sentiment aligns with the optimistic evaluation by Shore and signals a change from the traditional caution surrounding the retailer.

Upgraded forecast, but challenges ahead

A 6% upgrade to M&S's full-year profit before tax for FY24 by Shore, led by Black, reflects the combined positive attributes.

Despite the challenges of the UK macroeconomic backdrop and potential further raises in the base rate by the Bank of England, Shore's assessment highlights M&S's relative resilience.

However, trading uncertainties, especially regarding the situation in Eastern Europe, and potential issues with the redevelopment of the Marble Arch store, are acknowledged as challenges that need careful monitoring.

A new dawn for M&S?

The alignment of positive analysis from Clive Black at Shore Capital and Barclays Capital's research from Tuesday potentially indicates a shift in market sentiment towards M&S.

The strong full-price clothing sales, robust food offerings, and operational development paint an optimistic picture for this established UK retailer.

This does come with some notes of caution, but the current trajectory seems to signal what could indeed be a new dawn for Marks & Spencer.
