Apple's Q3 results: A critical moment amid high expectations

Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL)'s cheerleaders will see its quarterly results on Thursday (August 3) as an opportunity to underscore the resilience of the business.

However, there is a growing groundswell of opinion, based on recent downward earnings revisions, that wonders whether the fundamentals fully underpin the tech Goliath's heady $3 trillion valuation.

Strength in China

According to an analysis from West Coast investment bank Wedbush Securities, the technology giant is expected to post "at least in-line June quarter iPhone revenues" with potential upside, largely driven by iPhone 14's demand and a clear uptick in the key China region.

Apple has found success in navigating Beijing tensions, gaining approximately 300 basis points in market share in the China region over the past year (Wedbush Securities).

With around 25% of the current iPhone installed base not upgrading their phones in over four years, anticipation grows for the anniversary edition iPhone 15, slated for a mid-September launch.

While the transition from iPhone 14 to iPhone 15 is expected to be steadier than some other peak-to-valley cycles, analysts predict average selling prices (ASPs) are moving toward $900/$925 on iPhones, a trend seen as noteworthy heading into the next iPhone cycle.

Services business on the rise

Beyond the iPhone's continued success, Apple's Services business is setting the stage for a stronger future.

Wedbush's analysis estimates that Apple's services business could see a reacceleration into double digits, citing an increase of more than 100 million new iPhone users on the ecosystem over the past 18 months and improved attach rates on services.

The overall worth of Apple's Services business is placed between $1.3 trillion and $1.4 trillion, a figure that reflects an underappreciated asset by some market observers.

Earnings expectations

According to Zacks Investment Research, the consensus earnings per share (EPS) forecast for the quarter stands at $1.19, a figure derived from 11 analysts' forecasts. With an 'outperform' rating and a 12-month price target of $220, Wedbush maintains confidence in Apple's continued growth.

Despite these rosy projections, some analysts are predicting a year-over-year decline in the third quarter (Seeking Alpha). Such contrasting opinions add an element of suspense as investors, analysts, and tech enthusiasts worldwide await the print/guidance from Apple's management.

A moment of truth?

Apple's fiscal Q3 results come at a defining moment, where optimistic projections battle with underlying concerns in a landscape fraught with uncertainties.

The company's performance in China, the robust iPhone demand, and the potential reacceleration of its Services business point to a favourable outlook.

However, with expectations riding high, the stakes are significant as the world tunes in to see if Apple can indeed flex its muscles and continue its role as a technology industry leader.

The results could either fortify Apple's unique position or expose cracks in an otherwise gleaming façade.
