Birkenstock eyeing potential IPO worth more than $8 billion

Birkenstocks may soon be coming to the trading room floor.

L Catterton, the private equity firm with backing from luxury French fashion house LVMH, is planning a potential listing that could value the iconic German sandal brand at more than $8 billion.

More than two year ago, L Catterton and billionaire Bernard Arnault’s investment company acquired a majority stake in the company, which valued it at about US$4.4 billion.

The firm is working with Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) Group Inc. and JPMorgan Chase & Co (NYSE:JPM), according to reporting from Bloomberg News.

Neither a final decision nor a proposed timeline have been announced, but Birkenstocks are enjoying something approaching a cultural moment lately with Margot Robbie sporting a pink pair in the new Barbie movie.

Sales have been growing, too. In 2022, Birkenstock reported revenue of €1.2 billion (US$1.3 billion), up 29% from 2021.

The 250-year-old company has also been investing in production, including €120 million for a factory in the German town Pasewalk, locateed north of Berlin.
