NatWest tops charts for most complaints over account closures

Bad publicity surrounding NatWest continues to pile on, this time regarding its decision to close several bank accounts other than the one belonging to Nigel Farage.

The high street lender received the joint most complaints, 274, about its decisions to close bank accounts last year, including cases linked to the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Barclays also received the exact same number of complaints in the 2022/23 financial year.

Data provided to Bloomberg by the Financial Ombudsman Service, an independent organisation that deals with issues between customers and lenders, said NatWest was the most complained about bank for the last year threes in terms of account closures.

News of further complaints come after the high-profile resignation of CEO Alison Rose, who left her role after intense backlash after its subsidiary, Coutts, closed outspoken former MP Nigel Farage’s account.
