TiKTok launches text option as 'Twitter-killer' battle heats up

The social media battle continues to rumble on as TikTok, renowned for its short-form video content, launches an option to post just text, not dissimilar to a tweet on Twitter.

Users can add colours, stickers, hashtags and sounds to their text posts in which they can share written content - also like Twitter, Meta's new Threads or its original Facebook platform.

“With text posts, we’re expanding the boundaries of content creation for everyone on TikTok, given the written creativity we’ve seen in comments, captions, and videos a dedicated space to shine,” TikTok said in a press release.

Text posts can be accessed by clicking on the camera button on the app, where a text tab will then be displayed.

The move comes as the battle to be the top social media platform heats up.

Recently, Elon Musk’s Twitter rebranded to X, but not before rival Mark Zuckerberg created his own version of Twitter, Threads.

Registered users on Threads quickly smashed through the 100mln record, though active users were just below half that before, by its third week, falling to 13mln, while Twitter's user numbers are said to be somewhere between 230 and 350 million.

According to data from Statista, as of January 2023, Facebook was the most popular social media platform ranked by active monthly users, with YouTube in second and Instagram in third, followed by Twittter and Tiktok.
