Virgin Media O2 slashes a tenth of its workforce

Virgin Media O2, the mobile telecom group, is laying off more workers bringing the proposed figure to around 2,000 workers by the end of this year, according to redundancy notices given out to staff on Monday.

Hundreds of staff have been added to a list of 1,400 workers who were put at risk in February, reports from the Times revealed.

The job cuts represent over a tenth of the group’s workforce and comes as the telecom company continues to battle with a large debt pile.

Two years ago, when Virgin Media and O2 merged, it carried over £20.2bln of debt – as well as the hope of cutting costs by £350mln per year.

A spokesman for Virgin Media O2 said: “While we know any period of change can be difficult, we are committed to supporting all of our people.”

In May, telecom rival BT group announced it would be cutting between 40,000 and 55,000 jobs by the end of the decade as it shifts to a more “digital approach”.

Similarly, Vodafone said it would be removing 11,000 staff members from its workforce, accounting for around a tenth of the group’s total staff.
