Chinese social media platform TikTok is the most popular news source for people between 12- and 15-year-olds, according to Ofcom.

The latest report into news consumption by the UK watchdog revealed that the app is the most used single news source among the age group, with 28% using the platform for news, ahead of YouTube and Instagram, both at 25%.

Among 16- to 24-year-olds, Instagram is the most used single news source, with 44% of people gathering their news from the Meta-owned platform.

Facebook is second, with 33%, alongside BBC One, also with 33%, Twitter with 31% and TikTok with 29%. BBC is the only ‘traditional’ media source to feature in the top five.

People aged between 16 and 24 are also more like to consume news online compared to adults generally, while 63% do so via their mobile phones, compared to 40% of adults.

BBC One remains the number one broadcast source for news, with 71% of adults above 16 tuning in for their news on BBC One, with ITV1 in second at 49%.
