Electra Battery Materials reports first customer shipment produced at refinery complex

Electra Battery Materials Corporation (TSX-V:ELBM, NASDAQ:ELBM) has announced the first customer shipment of nickel-cobalt produced at its refinery complex north of Toronto from recycled battery material.

The achievement marks a significant milestone in the company's efforts to commercialize its black mass refining capabilities.

In a statement, Trent Mell, CEO of Electra commented: “Since the trial’s launch late in 2022, we have proven that our proprietary hydrometallurgical process works successfully, produces high-quality products, including lithium carbonate and nickel-cobalt MHP, and supports compelling economics."

Electra's black mass trial, which began in late 2022, aims to validate the company's hydrometallurgical process on a plant scale and test its refinery equipment. Since its inception, the trial has seen several achievements, including the successful plant-scale recycling of black mass material and the recovery of critical metals for the electric vehicle battery supply chain.

In addition to the successful recovery of lithium and the production of mixed hydroxide precipitate product (MHP) with metal grades for nickel and cobalt meeting market specifications, Electra released a desktop scoping study in May 2023. The study highlighted the company's assumptions, such as processing 2,500 tonnes of black mass annually and using analysts' long-term price forecasts, to project positive economic outcomes.

Furthermore, Electra announced a strategic investment commitment from the Three Fires Group Inc in June 2023, which is expected to accelerate the company's battery recycling strategy in North America. This investment will aid in the development of a permanent 2,500-tonne-per-annum recycling refinery, as Electra continues to progress its cobalt sulfate refinery construction.

Electra's overarching strategy focuses on onshoring the electric vehicle supply chain and includes integrating black mass recycling, nickel sulfate production, and cobalt refining.

The company is dedicated to ethically sourcing battery materials and is actively advancing its exploration-stage project in the Idaho Cobalt Belt while expanding cobalt sulfate processing in Bécancour, Quebec.
