ChatGPT owner under investigation from US watchdog

Artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT’s creator is being investigated by the US competition watchdog.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) said it has begun an examination into OpenAI to uncover the company’s data privacy rules as well as the measures it is taking to stop its technology from giving wrong information.

Aside from that, the regulator will also consider whether ChatGPT has caused harm by providing false answers to users’ questions.

According to the FTC letter sent to OpenAI, published in the Washington Post, OpenAI is being investigated over whether it has “engaged in unfair or deceptive privacy or data security practices.”

Sam Altman, the company’s founder, said he will work with investigators but expressed disappointment at the case being opened and how he found out via the Washington Post.

OpenAI isn’t just at the receiving end of the FTC probe.

Comedian Sarah Silverman and two other authors have taken legal action against the company, as well as Meta, citing copyright infringement.
