Longtime Google employee Urs Hölzle will be stepping back from management after more than two decades of leading technical teams at the company.
As Google’s eighth employee, its first vice president of engineering and most recently holding a senior position in its cloud unit, Hölzle has played an integral role in shaping the company, now the main business under parent company Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG).
He will transition to a role as a Google Fellow, Google said per a Bloomberg report.
According to CNBC, Hölzle will focus on a small number of technical assignments at a time in addition to acting as an advisor. This will reportedly include articulating technical artificial intelligence (AI) processes, facilitating discussions and encouraging quicker decision-making.
This news comes amid other changes within Google’s cloud organization, per an email from Cloud CEO Thomas Kurian viewed by CNBC.
Among various appointments, Amazon Web Services (AWS) vice president of data centre community Chris Vonderhaar will lead Google's Cloud Supply Chain, leaving AWS after 13 years, and operations and vice president of engineering at Google Cloud Ben Treynor Sloss will begin reporting directly to Kurian, the email said.
A Google spokesperson confirmed the role changes but did not provide additional details, CNBC reported.
