Google parent Alphabet's AI efforts and ad revenue in focus for 2Q

Google’s parent company Alphabet is set to kick off Big Tech earnings season when it hands down its latest quarterly earnings on Tuesday, July 25.

Investors will be looking out for any mention of the company’s artificial intelligence (AI) push, specifically how it is integrating AI into its search offering, and the impact of its ongoing cost-cutting measures, which included reducing its headcount by thousands.

How the company’s advertising business is faring amid the broader slowdown in digital ad spend will also be looked at as well as YouTube's performance as it faces competition from TikTok and other platforms.

For 2Q, analysts, on average, expect that the company will report an increase in its profits over the year ago-quarter, forecasting earnings per share (EPS) of $1.32 up from $1.21 in 2Q 2022.

Revenue is pegged at $72.75 billion, up from $69.7 billion in the year-ago quarter.

Alphabet shares traded up 1.2% at US$121.70 ahead of its 2Q results.
