Tesla has introduced a new referral scheme as the price war in the electric vehicle markets heats up.
UK buyers will get £1,000 on Model S and Xs starting today if they cite a referral from an existing owner, while buyers of Model 3 and Model Ys will get £500.
Referral discounts in other countries are similar with customers in China offered around US$480 on Model 3s.
Promotions are also running in the US Germany, France, Canada, Mexico, Hong Kong and Singapore.
According to Reuters, existing Tesla customers in China are posting their referral codes online and inviting other people to use them.
Overnight, Tesla also announced some layoffs from its battery pack assembling line in Shanghai, where around 1,000 workers are employed reflecting fierce competition in the Chinese EV market.
Since the start of 2023, Reuters estimates Tesla has cut the base price of the Model 3 in China by 14% and by 10% for the Model Y, its global best seller, which has prompted a revival in sales in the country and elsewhere
Tesla sold a record 247,217 Shanghai-made vehicles in the second quarter, adding 2023 would see China account for over 50% of cars sold for the first time.
