Destiny Pharma PLC (AIM:DEST, OTC:DTTYF)'s key product, XF-73, aimed at preventing post-surgical infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus), continues to progress as expected, according to a note from Shore Capital.
A recent meeting of the company's scientific advisory board (SAB) assured experts in the anti-infectives field and surgeons regarding the development of XF-73.
The planned US phase III study, if successful, should secure a broad label reflecting the drug's relevance across surgical procedures, the broker noted.
Of particular importance to the commercial success of XF-73 is its resistance profile. Given rising concerns about increased resistance to mupirocin, a topical antibiotic traditionally used in nasal de-colonisation procedures, XF-73's ability to resist similar issues is viewed favourably.
Shore Capital said that the SAB meeting also underscored XF-73's potential to contribute to antibiotic stewardship, a crucial element of mitigating resistance development.
By preventing post-surgical infections, XF-73 can reduce the necessity for post-surgery systemic antibiotic use.
Moreover, considering the growing rates of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), XF-73 could diminish the risk of horizontal infection through effective nasal decolonisation.
