Ryanair hits new passenger record, but WizzAir’s growth cannot be beat

Ryanair Holdings PLC (LSE:RYA) achieved a record month for traffic in June, logging 17.4mln passengers with a load factor of 95%.

This represents a 9% year-on-year increase against the 15.9mln passengers logged in June 2022.

It was also the second record-setting month in a row, following May’s 17mln total passenger count.

On a rolling 12-month basis, Ryanair has carried 173.4mln passengers to their destinations with a 94% load factor, compared to 134.5mln passengers with an 86% load factor this time last year.

Ryanair operated over 96,250 flights in June 2023 with over 900 cancellations impacting around 160,000 passengers, which the Irish carrier said was mainly due to air traffic control strikes in France.

Per French law, international flights are prohibited from crossing French airspace during an ATC strike, even though domestic flights must keep running.

Other European budget carriers have also enjoyed an impressive post-Covid resurgence.

Hungarian rival Wizz Air carried 5.3mln passengers in June, marking a 22.5% year-on-year increase.

WizzAir’s load factor underperformed against Ryanair at 92.2%

However, on a rolling 12-month basis WizzAir has seen extraordinary passenger growth of 49.2%, boding well for the carrier’s self-proclaimed status as the fastest-growing European airline
