Google reportedly makes quantum computing breakthrough

Google has reportedly developed a quantum computer that performs calculations in an instant, which would otherwise take the world's best supercomputers 47 years, marking a significant stride in the evolution of quantum computing,

According to the Daily Telegraph, this new machine, with a significantly improved qubit count of 70 compared to 53 in its 2019 predecessor, offers an exponential boost in power, making it 241 million times more potent than the previous model.

Quantum computers could potentially revolutionise fields like climate science and drug discovery, but they also pose challenges for today's encryption systems, making them a top priority for national security.

Despite the achievement, some critics argue that these machines need to prove more practical utility, beyond academic research.

Quantum computing, which leverages quantum physics' peculiar states, remains a contentious and rapidly evolving field.

Google is owned by Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG).
