Tesco names Gerry Murphy as its new chair

Gerry Murphy, currently the chairman of luxury fashion brand Burberry, is set to take over the same role at Tesco PLC, replacing John Allan in September.

The reshuffle comes after allegations about Allan's behaviour led him to step down to avoid becoming a "distraction" to the supermarket chain.

Though Allan strongly denied three out of four claims made by four women, he admitted to making an inappropriate comment to a female CBI worker about her dress suiting her figure and apologised immediately.

Murphy will resign as chairman of ingredients maker Tate & Lyle in September to focus on his new role.

He boasts past experience as a non-executive director of British American Tobacco, Merlin Entertainments (AIM:MERL), and health firm Reckitt Benckiser, and most recently as group CEO of B&Q and Screwfix owner Kingfisher.

Interim chair, Byron Grote, said: "[Murphy] was the unanimous choice of the board and will bring to our board a record of strong and effective boardroom leadership and a deep understanding of retail and consumer-focused businesses and corporate governance."
